72 HOURS OF ADVENTURE AND ROMANCE
Couples Fall in Love with Hollywood, Florida
HOLLYWOOD, FL - Florida may be known for its theme parks and large beach cities, but along each coast traveling couples will find new small towns, both quaint and romantic, are making waves. On the east coast nestled between beach chic Fort Lauderdale and sultry South Beach lies secluded Hollywood Beach, a town known for its heyday glamour that has now re-emerged as the region’s next hot spot.
Whether looking for a babymoon, honeymoon, or simply a romantic interlude, Hollywood is the perfect new getaway for weekend escapes. Couples searching for some Florida heat will be able to turn up the temperature with this suggested itinerary for lovers:
DAY 1 |
|
(Thurs. late afternoon) Arrive at the hotel and get the lay of the land with a Segway tour of the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.
Return to the hotel to unpack and rest before some in-room dining. After dinner, snuggle up and call it an early night.
|
DAY 2 |
|
(Friday) After an early breakfast, rent bicycles and enjoy a scenic ride along the newly renovated Broadwalk. Named one of America’s “Top 10 Nostalgic Promenades” by USA Today, the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk is a two and one-half mile, brick-lined pedestrian promenade bordered by six miles of coastline, boutique hotels, charming shops, and cafés. Bikes may be rented by the hour, day or week. Speak to a hotel concierge for reservations.
Then, spend the morning on the seven miles of Blue Wave beaches. Chair, umbrella, and cabana rentals are available at many spots along the beach.
Pack up around 12:30 p.m. and head out for a bite at Le Tub on A1A. Le Tub is one of Oprah Winfrey’s favorite South Florida restaurants, but visitors should not expect a fancy restaurant. Le Tub is loaded with discarded bathtubs, cracked commodes, and other household flotsam. GQ claimed Le Tub is “a dream of a dump” and serves “the best hamburger in America.” Arrive with enough time and expect no rush as the place is always crowded. Le Tub, 1100 N. Ocean, Hollywood, P: 954.921.9425
Following lunch, visit Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park, one of three converging parks in the area, where you can canoe, kayak, bike, hike, fish, or take a boat tour. Share a kayak for two and become one with nature and each other while paddling through the more than 1,500 acres of mangrove and Florida wildlife. Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park, 751 Sheridan Street, Hollywood, P: 954.926.2480, www.broward.org/parks
NOTE: Moonlight kayak tours are available during full moons
Return to the hotel and enjoy an early dinner followed by a beach walk prior to turning in before midnight to rest for a busy next day. During nesting season, sit on the beach and watch the sea turtles make their way up onto the sand to lay their eggs at night.

DAY 3 |
|
(Saturday) Wake up early for a long day and watch the blissful sunrise. An early breakfast jump-starts the day for an active morning.
After breakfast, visit the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood. Saturday mornings are always entertaining at the ArtsPark with ever-changing exhibits, classes, music, and more. Built in 2003, the ArtsPark is an arts-themed park on a 10-acre area of land. Among the favorite classes and demonstrations offered is the art of glass blowing. Sign up and create a one-of-a-kind piece as a keepsake of this romantic weekend. Or, bring a blanket and sit under the singing baobab tree and relax before shopping. ArtsPark at Young Circle, Hollywood Blvd. at U.S. 1, P:954.921.3404, www.hollywoodfl.org/artspark
Following the ArtsPark or in lieu of a class, take a leisurely stroll around historic Downtown Hollywood with its brick-lined sidewalks and blocks of unique boutiques, art galleries, and cafés. Pick up a colorful souvenir from Mosaica, which is both a working mosaic art studio and contemporary fine art gift gallery displaying the work of more than 100 different crafters from around the world. www.downtownhollywood.com
Stop by the acclaimed Lola’s on Harrison where Chef Michael Wagner has created a superb lunch menu and order some take out.
During the afternoon, choose from one of many water sports, including kite surfing, parasailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving adventures offered daily, weather permitting. Parasail high above the Atlantic Ocean supported by the wind while being launched and pulled by a speedboat. Ride solo, or take a tandem ride for two. Another lovely option is a half-day of snorkeling or scuba diving in one of three reefs — Cruz del Sur, Tenneco Tower Deep, or Tenneco Tower Shallow. Encounter species of fish over or near these artificial reefs. Hotel concierge can assist in planning and coordinating these activities or visit Hollywood’s Web site for charter companies offering these services.
In the late afternoon, get a bird’s eye view of Hollywood and its surrounding beaches via a helicopter ride from Flight Seeing Private Tours in Pembroke Pines. Take a 30-minute drive from the beaches west to this more suburban area from where the ride will begin and hop onto a charter that will tour the city, providing the best and most inspiring views. Flight Seeing Private Tours, 1602 SW 77 Ave., Pembroke Pines, www.ataflightschool.com
Following the flight seeing tour, return to Hollywood for dinner and a dance. Dine at Fulvio’s 1900 and celebrate with a romantic Italian dinner for two. Choose from a boulevard of lounges from Spice-Resto Lounge, where you can dance on tables, to a more casual setting such as La Barraca Tapas Bar & Café or Harrison’s Wine Bar for drinks.

DAY 4 |
|
(Sunday) Sleep-in after a late night and wake up mid-morning for Sunday brunch at Broadwalk Restaurant & Grill, a small diner famous for its delicious variety of breakfast foods. Broadwalk Restaurant & Grill, 1400 N. Surf Rd., Hollywood, P: 954.922.0322
Along the way, stop at the popular weekend organic farmer’s market and juice bar.
Afterward, spa may be what the doctor ordered. Enjoy a couple's massage at one of the many full-service hotels and resorts to relax after a long weekend.
End this love break with a walk on the Broadwalk and squeeze in some last minute souvenir shopping.
